We found some cheap flights from London direct to Crete, so we decided to start our Europe travels there and work our way North.
We used AirBnB, if you don't have an account you can use this link to create one & get a NZD $50 credit :) - www.airbnb.co.nz/c/katyh793
There are some stunning beaches in Crete and ideally we had wanted to stay near one of them but settled on a place in Gerani. It worked really well, it had a kitchen, 2-bedrooms, shared pool and was close to the beach and a little town. We did day trips out to the few insanely beautiful beaches we wanted to go.
What we did:
Beach, Eat, Pool, Eat, Beach
- Falasarna Beach, we did a day trip to Falasarna Beach but in search of a spot to ourselves we ended up driving right along to the end of the beach and past it. We found some gorgeous rocky coastline, lots of goats and a little pebble bay all to ourselves. A local man passing by also showed us how to harvest fresh sea salt, straight out of the rock pools !
- Elafonissi Beach, is absolutely one of the most beautiful beaches we have been to....if you could take away ALL of the people. It took us honestly an hour to just drive down the hill to the parking area, maybe a kilometer, it was crazy ! The beach although big was unbelievably crowded, it is a beautiful pink sandy beach with one, almost two natural lagoons, perfect for the kids.
- Pool days, we also spent a few days just chilling and having fun in the pool. The girls aren't great in the car day after day. All of the restaurants / hotels we went into had pool areas that you can use if you eat at their restaurant, which was awesome.
- Chania Markets, we surprised our Aunty Cindy in Chania, she was on a cruise and thanks to the gorgeous Dayna we managed to track Cindy down and surprise her at the markets in Chania.
Oh my goodness, the food on Crete was amazing. I just loved it. Not the main stream tourist stuff, but we found a few more traditional / local restaurants off the beaten track and they were incredible. The salads .. drool.
Our absolute favourite was in Falasarna Beach, I have a photo with the name somewhere, so i'll try to find it..Golden Sunset maybe..I'll check. I had the best salad there I have ever had.
Happy to answer any questions :)
