Waikiki, Hawaii - Sept. 2017
We left New Zealand early September and flew direct to Honolulu Hawaii, 9 hrs with Air New Zealand.
We started our travels in Hawaii for several reasons, we had been once before for a holiday and loved it - the weather, the beaches, the natural beauty & hiking, plus we love the vibe and the healthy food ! It was also really the furthest we wanted to fly in one go .. not only because of the kids but Mark does not like flying ... he can't sit still for very long ! We stayed in Waikiki for a couple of nights and then went onto The Big Island, then Molokai before returning to Waikiki for almost a week .. as coincidentally we had some friends holidaying there too.
We're also heading back to Hawaii in February 2018 on our way back to NZ.
Below is a brief run-down of our stay, we are happy to answer any questions :)
We used AirBnB and stayed in a privately owned two-bedroom apartment, it was a few blocks back from the beach, making it a lot more affordable but still within walking distance from the beach.
We really just chilled by the pool and at the beach. We plan on doing more when we return in a few months, so look out for our next Waikiki update.
Poppies swimming just took off spending a few solid days in the water, it has been so neat to watch her confidence and ability flourish.
Surfing - one awesome benefit of Waikiki for us is the surf on the main beach. It's just right there. Mark can go for a quick surf and it is actually a quick surf, there's no long drive to get there. We are both just learning to surf so Waikiki is perfect, it's nearly always mellow and consistent. There is surfboard hire right on the beach, or look a few blocks back for a cheaper rate.
Hilton Lagoon - We spent a day at the lagoon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, it was great for the girls. The perfect place for Poppie to gain more confidence swimming in the ocean and also to practice snorkeling. We hired a paddle board for a few hours and both the girls loved that. We were not staying there, the lagoon is open and easily accessible to the public. http://www.hiltonhawaiianvilla...
We haven't an amazing healthy cafe / restaurant close to Waikiki beach, that I have absolutely loved so if you know of one please let us know !
Down to Earth - This is my absolute favourite place in Waikiki !!!! It is an organic grocery store that also has a juice & smoothie bar and the most amazing salad bar. I could eat every meal here. It is about 2 miles / 4 km from Waikiki Beach. They are in other locations arounh Hawaii too :) https://www.downtoearth.org/
Cheesecake Factory - my brother and his wife took us here when we first visited Hawaii ... I admit with a name like The Cheesecake Factory I was super reluctant !! However it was great, you can easily find a healthy meal. The salads are amazing and huge ! They were more than happy to hold the sauce and / or meat etc. It is right in the centre of Waikiki too.
